Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu is well aware his team will have to beat Glasgow Rangers to the punch if they wish to make it through to next month’s UEFA Cup final in Manchester.

The Viola held Rangers to a goalless result at Ibrox in Thursday’s semi-final first leg and, with Rangers having already proved an ability to strike the killer blow away from home in this tournament, Mutu knows his team face an arduous task in Florence.

“It’s a good result to take home in view of the return leg,” admitted Mutu. “But the tie is 50-50, everything is to play for.”

”We weren’t thinking abaout the maych in Glasgow. It was tough bacause we met a very good side, which came here to defend and to play in the counterattack. But all in all er played a good game, we created chances, and even though it wasn’t easy we managed to win. This is the most important thing.

At the moment the most important thing is to be concrete, because we are in the final sprint and the points are important.’

Asked how the team are going into the game in Glasgow for the Uefa Cup semi-finals against Rangers, he said: ”We feel very confident and charged up, we have a desire to surprise everyone and reach the final.”

With the Serie A side having to score to stay in the tournament after a 1-1 first-leg draw, they started in an adventurous 4-3-3 formation. This duly paid dividends when Mutu hammered in an unstoppable long-range free-kick seven minutes before half-time. Eight minutes into the second half the Romanian international registered his sixth goal of this UEFA Cup campaign to end any lingering hopes PSV had of mounting a comeback. Sébastien Frey saving Timmy Simons’ penalty on 80 minutes summed up what was a frustrating night for Sef Vergoossen’s men.

Marvellous Mutu
On 38 minutes the Viola finally forced the breakthrough. Fabio Liverani rolled a free-kick to Mutu who drilled a marvellous swerving strike into Gomes’s top right-hand corner from 20 metres. PSV looked shell-shocked and, at the break, centre-forward Danko Lazovi? was brought on for the subdued Otman Bakkal. If that was the cue for a second goal, it came at the wrong end for Vergoossen as Fiorentina soon doubled their advantage.

Second goal
Gomes did well to keep out an attempt from Giampaolo Pazzini, who had broken clear, only for Mutu to calmly stroke in the rebound with his left foot from just outside the box, leaving PSV needing to score twice. Claudio Prandelli’s men nearly added an instant third but Gomes tipped Montolivo’s effort around the post. Minutes later Lazovi? missed from close range and Gomes also had a miraculous escape when he was caught out by a lob from Marco Donadel but tipped the ball on to the crossbar and then, lying on his back, gathered before Mutu could tap in for his hat-trick.

Fiorentina will face Rangers FC.

Fiorentina comfortably beat relegation battlers Reggina 2-0 to maintain a firm grip on fourth place in Serie A on Sunday.

Goals either side of the break from Giampaolo Pazzini and Adrian Mutu ensured the win while Reggina hit the post through Franco Brienza before Fiorentina’s Manuel Pasqual hit the crossbar as both sides served up an entertaining encounter.

But the hosts put the result beyond doubt in the 90th minute as Vieri and Massimo Gobbi set off on a fast counter-attack that resulted in Mutu picking up the ball in the area and blasting home from 12 yards.

The result leaves Fiorentina four points clear of Sampdoria and AC Milan while Reggina drop to the foot of the table.

Adrian Mutu believes the pressure of the occasion will spur him on in Fiorentina’s UEFA Cup quarter-final against PSV Eindhoven.

The Romania international, fit again after a knee injury sidelined him for a month, has scored three goals in the UEFA Cup this season and understands much will again rest on his shoulders when the Dutch champions visit Florence for Thursday’s first leg.

La Viola squeezed past Everton on penalties in the last round, but have barely held on to fourth place in Serie A while Mutu has been injured, the latest result a 3-1 defeat at Udinese on Sunday.

“When one feels pressure, you know of the responsibilities,” Mutu told the club’s official website.

“Therefore to know that everyone expects a great performance from me gives a little worry, but also great motivation.”

Mutu says La Viola can achieve success both in Europe and domestically, where they are chasing qualification to the Champions League.

“Everyone wants to take Fiorentina forward in Europe, and also secure fourth place in the championship,” he said.

“We are ambitious, and want to do well.”

Fiorentina and PSV played out to a 1-1 draw in Italy on Thursday. Both goals came in the second half with Adrian Mutu opening the scoring for the home side. Giampaolo Pazzini flicked a long ball into the area and keeper Heurelho Gomes reached out to punch the ball away. Instead it hit off Mutu and back into his own net. PSV’s tying goal came only 6 minutes later through Danny Koevermans. Ibrahim Afellay passed him the ball from the left and the Dutch striker netted into the top corner. The outcome of the series is now up in the air after this indecisive finish, but the Dutch side does have a slight advantage thanks to their away goal.

Adrian Mutu is prepared to carry the responsiblity to ensure Fiorentina achieve their season’s ambitions.

The 29-year-old said: “There’s is a lot of weight and worry on my shoulders, as well as the desire to drag everybody beyond their limits.”

In his second season at the club, Mutu has become the talisman for the Viola, whose absence was evident in the defeat to Udinese on Game Day 31 on Sunday.
